Center Playhouse Dedicated at Grand Opening Gala
The much anticipated Center Players' theater opened it's doors at an evening of black-tie elegance and theatrical excellence on March 3rd, 2001. The sold-out event began with a reception and Hors d'ouvres at Tratorria Portobello on South Street. A Champaign toast by Freehold Township Mayor Dorothy Avalone was followed by welcoming comments from Alice Berman, president of the Monmouth County Arts Council.
To commemorate the theater opening and Center Players' premiere presentation, "Crossing Delancey," Mechanic Street was renamed for the day to "Delancey Street." After enjoying a sumptuous dinner, live music by pianist Alan Wasserman and a chance to win fabulous goods and services at a silent auction, the attendees "crossed Delancey" to the new theater. There, a Hollywood-style spotlight lit up the skies, as theater-goers walked up a red carpet to enter the new playhouse.
"We're honored to finally deliver the dream of a performing arts center in Freehold," said David Sorin, the president of Center Players, during the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony. "Only through the untiring support of our Board of Directors, benefactors and patrons has this become a reality. Center Players and its patrons now have a facility to call their home." The new 49-seat theater features a completely new, built from the ground-up interior with all the amenities. The handicapped-accessible space features a raised stage with professional lighting, a backstage with dressing room, a control room and box office, an entry foyer and rest rooms. In addition, custom ordered seating and a high performance heating and cooling system provides exceptional comfort and convenience for our patrons.
The highlight of the Opening Gala was a superb performance by five outstanding local actors. At intermission, patrons were treated to gourmet desserts and coffees. The magic of the Opening Gala flowed through the rest of the month-long run. After a complete sell-out of the original four weekend performances, an additional four shows were added which were also sold out.
