Directing From The Heart
by Bernice Garfield-Szita

Directing a play can be one of the most exciting and challenging projects one can engage in. The transformation of a written script into a living breathing dramatic presentation requires the devotion of talented actors, artistic designers, a highly skilled technical staff, and an energetic behind-the-scenes crew.

As director, it is important to feel a strong connection to the play you are developing. "The Immigrant" by Mark Harelik has special meaning for me. My grandparents on both my mother and father's side immigrated from Russia to this country around the turn-of-the-century just as the author's did. They also fled the oppression in search of freedom and peace to raise their families. I have often thought, "What would have become of me and my children had my grandparents not found the courage to leave everything familiar to them and cross the ocean to this strange land of America?" Perhaps we would have been part of the horrific statistics of the holocaust.

Since September 11th, with the ever-pervading sense of terrorism lurking in the shadows, it is hard for us not to get caught up in the fear of everything and everyone "foreign" and want to shut our doors to today's immigrants. But we mustn't forget the history of this amazing country which was formed from diverse peoples from all parts of the world, each bringing their dreams, culture and energy to shape this strong nation.

"The Immigrant" reminds us that despite the destructive forces in the world, most people share the common threads of loving their families, wanting their children to be healthy and prosperous, and the hope that they can contribute something fine to this country that opened its doors to opportunity for us all.

The beautifully written dramatic comedy of "The Immigrant" by Mark Harelik frames the poignant path from immigration to assimilation for the Harelik family and their loving friends Ima and Milton Perry.

It is an honor for me to direct the wonderful cast and crew of "The Immigrant". I hope it touches you as it has touched all us who have worked so hard to bring it to life!
